Inspired by events that took place between the summer of 2002 and the spring of 2004, “Visit” tells the story of a relationship through music, from the composer’s perspective. Written as a song cycle, the selections go in a specific order, and coincide precisely with events and moments in the relationship. The two ensembles represent two different perspectives: a piano trio is representative of the composer’s mind, and a group with horns, electric guitar, electric bass and drums represents the two people together. The music ranges from strictly through composed to highly improvised, and stylistically stretches the limit of classification—some of it sounds like jazz, some more like the downtown-improvised scene, and some like heavy metal.
